The Authority Comic

The Authority is a superhero comic book published by DC Comics under the Wildstorm imprint. It was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and follows the adventures of the Authority, a superhero team mainly composed of Ellis-created characters taken from Stormwatch - a title Ellis had previously written.

It is notable for its intense graphic violence, grand scale and visual flair, often described as "widescreen" comics, and the uncompromising attitudes of its characters.

After witnessing the demise of most of her StormWatch teammates, Jenny Sparks wants to create a new super hero team dedicated to protecting Earth against threats of a global scale.

Joined by former StormWatch members Jack Hawksmoor and Shen Li-Min, Jenny recruits four new members, the Doctor, the Engineer, Apollo, and the Midnighter forming the ultra-powerful Authority.

Jack Hawksmoor - "The God of the Cities"
Hawksmoor suffered several operations during alien abductions which left him with the ability totalk to cities, absorbing their knowledge and strengths and sharing their pain and suffering. "As far as we understand, Jack can draw incredible powers from this and any other city. He eats pollution, talks to buildings and is virtually indestructible."
He has a punch thats like being hit with concrete, he merges with masonry and walks through walls. Unable to survive at length outside an urban area, he is truely one with the city.

Apollo - "The Sun King"
Apollo absorbs energy from the sun, obtaining super-strength, super-speed, and flying abilities. He was originally recruited as part of a secretStormwatch spin-off but during their first mission, Apollo was nearly killed. After staying in hiding for 5 years with a price on his head, he and Midnighter (the only other survivor of the mission) were contacted by Jenny Sparks where they both joined The Authority.

Swift - "The Winged Huntress"
Born in the Tibet, Shen Li-Min was found by Jenny Sparks, who triggered her powers and recruited her for the very secret Stormwatch Black. Shen Li-Min has wings to fly and is skilled in hand to hand combat. She also has enhanced senses that make her ultra-perceptive, especially with trajectories, speed and flight calculations.

Jenny Sparks - "The Spirit of the Twentieth Century"
"My name's Jenny Sparks. I'm electricity."

Born in 1900, Jenny Sparks stopped aging around 20. She has the ability to gain total control of electricity - she can manipulate and project it at will. Her parents drowned in the Titanic after which she left her very exclusive school and joined the army. She took part in many battles from 1920 to the 1980s, including World War 2. Later she was contacted about joining Stormwatch Black, a secret branch of the original Stormwatch. After most members of Stormwatch were killed, Jenny joined The Authority, the group that replaced Stormwatch, and became their leader.

The Engineer - "The Maker"
Angela Spica was an electronics engineer until the original 'Engineer' from Stormwatch died and sent her all the information she needed to duplicate the nanotechnology that he controlled. Angela has replaced her own blood with a nanomechanic fluid which keeps her alive and covers her body like a liquid metal. This nanotechnology can be used at will to create more or less anything she can imagine by using micromatter in the air.

The Midnighter - "Nights' Bringer of War"
"And what's more, I know what you're going to do next. I've already played this fight in my head, a million times, from each and every angle. I won this fight before you even turned up."

Midnighter was artificially enhanced with a special nervous system, super-strong bones and enhanced muscle structure. He now has neural implants that make him capable of pre-analysing any fight from a million different angles before an opponent even moves.

The Doctor - "The Shaman"
"All magic is change. I move things from here to there, change this thought to that thought, step behind the scenes and rearrange the set..remix reality."

Ever since its creation, the earth has always had a shaman to look after it. This guardian has vast magic powers and when he dies, his knowledge passed on to the next in line. The Doctor has not only the power of all the previous incarnations, but also carries their knowledge, experience and their personalities.
